Overview

Star Scholar is an offline app. It has no account system, no server, and no analytics — nothing you do in the app is sent anywhere. This policy exists because the app asks for one permission (your location) and stores a small amount of data on your device, and you should know exactly what that is and isn't.

Location data

If you choose "Use my location" in Location Settings, the app requests your device's location a single time — it does not track you continuously, and it does not run in the background. That one reading is used only to calculate which constellations are above your horizon right now. It is never transmitted anywhere; it is written to storage that lives only on your device. You can skip this entirely and enter coordinates manually or search for a city instead — nothing in the app is gated behind granting location access.

What the app stores on your device

Two things, both in local app storage that Star Scholar controls and nothing else can read: your location (if you set one) and your sky-darkness preference, and your flashcard and quiz progress (which constellations you've marked known, and your quiz scores). Uninstalling the app deletes all of it. There is no cloud backup and no sync — if you switch devices, this progress does not come with you.

What the app does not do

It does not create an account for you. It does not use analytics, crash reporting, or advertising SDKs. It does not access your contacts, camera, microphone, or photos. It does not connect to the internet for any part of its core functionality — the star catalog, constellation data, and city list are bundled inside the app itself.

Third-party data bundled in the app

The star positions, constellation patterns, and city list built into the app are compiled from public datasets (the HYG Database, d3-celestial, and GeoNames), each under its own open license. These are static reference data processed once when the app was built — using them involves no data exchange of any kind while you use the app. Full attribution and licenses are on the app's Credits screen.

Children's privacy

Star Scholar does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age — there is nowhere for it to go even if it did. The app is suitable for a general audience.

Changes to this policy

If what the app collects or stores ever changes, this page will change to describe it accurately, and the date above will be updated.
